No Thank You Mommy, I’m All Set…

…Well, it didn’t exactly go like that, but if Cadence could talk, I’m almost positive that’s what she would have said. Thursday was a normal day here in Desert Town- Cadence was being her normal destructive, fussy, non-sleeping self. The only difference? She would not drink her milk to save her life. Every time I gave her a bottle, she’d push it out or even better- chuck it across the room.

Now I’ve had a bunch of moms tell me “just get her to eat whatever you can,” so in that regard, she ate crackers and a few of her Gerber fruit puffs, but that’s it. She took water and even juice, but no milk. By mid-day, I was just scratching my head when my light bulb finally came on. “Put her milk in the cup dummy” I said (talking to myself- per usual),  so I did and- she drank it!

Friday, same deal, no bottle for Cadence- only sippy cup. My Mom said I should be glad that she wants her cup and I shouldn’t force her to take the bottle. Some of my Tweeps also said that this would make getting rid of bottles THAT much easier for me.

It only makes sense. Someone died and told Cadence that she was Queen Nefertiti and Chris and I are here to wait on her hand and foot. She IS the boss of this house and our lives- it is what it is. So of course she would be the one to tell ME when she’s all done using the bottle, not the other way around.

I am happy, though. When I toss all of the bottles, there won’t be this big scene. The only thing we’ll probably have to fight with her for is the pacifier- and maybe not even that. She’s a big fan of spitting it out and throwing it out of her crib. She’s actually down to one pacifier because we lose those things like people lose their keys. I said today if she loses this last one, she’s outta luck because I’m not buying anymore. She’s 8 months, I’m not buying new pacifiers. Too bad, so sad little one.

So, when the Hubs and I head out to Wal-Mart this weekend, I have to buy another sippy cup- since we only have one. This way I am armed and ready to feed the Queen and I’m not depending on just one cup.

I was very lucky. My son, like Cadence, decided when it was time to give up the bottle and the pacifier. I so wasn’t looking forward to the fight of weaning him off those but it ended up not being a fight at all. Phew! He’s always been an independent kid who knows when he’s ready for the next step and I’m guessing that Cadence will be the same way. Lucky you!

  • I think that’s awesome she is only preferring the sippy cups already! It will make the transition easier. If she decides she wants to be a big girl and be rid of those baby sucking things then let her, LOL. I started on the sippy cups super late so I was worried how the transition would be. The weekend of my son’s 1st birthday I just woke up and decided that it would be “No More Bottle Day!”. Thank the Lord it went well. I was able to throw those bottles right out. Switching him to regular milk has been a beast though and so will getting rid of the binkie/pacifier. I have him down to only being able to use it at nap/night time and I hope by the time he is 18 months I can throw it out the window–well, they are customized with his name, so at least put them up with the rest of his “collector items” :)

Anyways, good job Cadence…now let your mommy & daddy get some decent sleep lil mama!
