What's In A Name?

What was that Shakespeare said?

A vagina by any other name would still be a vagina?*

Oh… wait. That wasn’t Shakespeare.

There are so many different names for the vagina:

  • Kitty Kat
  • Pussy
  • Cooch
  • Coochie
  • That’s all I can think of right now. And why on earth are there so many references to cats- do women remind people of cats?

Anyway, the point of this rant is this:

I have an 18 month old who is an avid streaker and pee-er on the floor-er. She also thoroughly enjoys grabbing her genitalia, which I know is normal for little children to want to explore their bodies. I have pretty much all nephews and so I haven’t had much experience with caring for little girls. As Baby Girl learns to talk and shout things at me like “Nonononono” and “deez,” I am trying to figure out what to tell her to call her vagina.

Little boys get cool names like “pee-pee” or “wee-wee” or “weiner” or “choo-choo” or (my favorite by far) “doo-doo” (a family friend’s 4-year old calls his penis his doo-doo LOL). But what do little girls call their genitalia?

I kinda just want to call it her vagina. It’s not like it hangs down like a penis so calling it a wee-wee seems weird to me. So that’s what I’ve been doing. I say “Please put your clothes on, you are showing everyone your vagina” or sometimes I’ll say “private parts.”

Where are the Mommas of little girls out there- what have you referenced their vaginas as or have you just stuck to its proper name? Let me know.

*The actual quote from Romeo and Juliet is:

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”
Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

  • For my daughters it is Tootie or the older one VaJaJa so i think it depends on the age and what you are comfortable hearing in public or mixed company since at this age there is not much censorship between brain and mouth

K my son’s were called “wookies” my daughter’s had more variety. Like “hoohoo”" or the usual “pee-pee”. Privates and hooha are also great names. I save vagina for when my daughter was older. It sounded weird to call a baby girl privates a vagina? Too mature or adultishy! I stick with my most commonly used “hooha”. Teehee

  • We call it the “hoonie” around here. My 1st dd used that as her word for vagina when she was potty training & we’ve stuck with it since. hehe.

  • My sister has her girls calling it their “cookie”…

Really, I would opt for vagina if at all possible. Make it very specific. If she is grabbing her behind, you could say ‘bottom’ or whatever. (if she asks you could tell her anus) Make the whole ‘area’ private parts’.
As cute as these pet names may be, there may come a time when a problem arises – do you really want your child to say ‘my hoochie hurts’ ir ‘look at my hoohah’ , I mean no one but you would know what she means.
You can also teach her what is off limits for others to touch, or what she should be covering. Her ‘private parts are exactly that- private and should be kept private.
If she needed to tell a teacher or another trusted adult -”Bobbie tried to touch my vagina” it would tell the adult exactly what happened and also indicate to the adult she knew exactly where on her body she was touched.
Pet names are cute, but if later on down the road she isn’t comfortable with proper names, being too vague is a disservice to her. She can adopt a pet name of her own, if she so chooses when she is old enough to give it a pet name !
And honestly ladies who have boys- is a 30 year old man calling it his ‘choo choo’ that attractive ? ;)
    This is only my opinion…

Bwahahaha Ellen you are a riot! I don’t know. Maybe some 30-year old men calling it their choo-choo would turn some women on. They wanna ride the train! Ha!!

i have a little boy so i lucked out on that one but my good friend has a 5 year old daughter and they called it a “gee-gee”, not sure why but seemed to be a good stepping stone to va-gee-gee which has now turned into vagina.

  • bwhahahaha!!!! This is the funniest post I’ve read this morning! Yes, I have heard friends have their little girls call it a privacy or privates too. Although one friend’s daughter calls it her “front butt”. Um. funny, but sort of weird. So there. That is the two cents from the momma of the little boy!

  • That’s funny cuz my daughter calls it her privacy too- which derived from her aunt (who’s only 5 years older than my daughter) called it her “private”. I liked that but one day DD heard me say “I need privacy” and for some reason, since then, she has called it her “privacy” – but the way she says it, it sounds like “piracy” which totally cracks me up!

Hafa Adai (hi & hello), I’m from Guam, a small island in da South
Pacific ocean. We call the vagina, “bebe” which translates
    To vagina…plus its Cute…just like our vaginas…haha

  • Oh girl, you crack me up.

    Personally I’d opt for hoohah.

Nah, my ex fiance’s little girl called it her “privacy” and I always thought that was a very gentle way of putting it. I’ll probably go with that.

    Or Hoohah.

    HOOOOOOOOHAHHHHHHHH!!!!
